Musical Director - Lloyd Buck

Lloyd Buck

Lloyd studied at the Royal College of Music in London, and later at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he graduated with distinction under the tutelage of Paul Janes.  He was appointed Ellesmere Port Music Society Musical Director in 2012.

He has performed at many prestigious venues including St Martin in the Fields and St James' Piccadilly in London, the Colston Hall and St George's Brandon Hill in Bristol, and the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. He made his concerto debut playing Martin Ellerby's 'Cabaret Concerto' with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the Royal Northern College of Music, and was highly commended in the college's own concerto competition in 2010.

He recorded his debut CD of piano music by Bortkiewicz in 2008 with Amemptos Music to great critical acclaim, and has recorded a disc of solo piano music by Alkan, which includes two premiere recordings, one of which being the legendary 'Scherzo Focoso', thought for many years to be virtually unplayable.

Lloyd studied under Niel Immelman and John Byrne whilst at the Royal College of Music, and has benefited from master-classes with a number of distinguished artists, including Stephen Hough, Bernard d'Ascoli and Graham Scott.

In addition to working as a soloist, Lloyd is frequently in demand as an accompanist and plays for Vocal Expressions Ladies Choir, who are based near Holmfirth in Derbyshire. He has worked on a wide range of repertoire, with styles as diverse as baroque opera, German lieder and Cole Porter. Between November 2007 and July 2008, he held the post of accompanist to the Bristol Schools' Chamber Choir, which has a national reputation as one of the country's leading youth choirs. He has also accompanied at Australia House and the Royal Academy of Music in London, and at St George's Brandon Hill and the Colston Hall in Bristol. In addition to accompanying musicians, Lloyd also worked at the Northern Ballet School in Manchester.

Lloyd is also a composer, writing 'tuneful and tonal' works ranging from short solo pieces and 'a capella' motets to large scale choral and orchestral material. He often performs his own piano music in recitals, and one of his motets appears on the CD 'Excelsior', recently released by Amemptos Music.

The Society is proud to announce that Lloyd's composition The Returning Sea with lyrics by Dan Poulton received its world premiere at the December 2017 concert.

Lloyd is Musical Director of Ellesmere Port Music Society and also The Barnby Choir based in Wilmslow.
